Fort Lauderdale Int'l Boat Show Preview

We're excited to present three new Superyacht designs at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show later this week. Two expedition yachts will be presented in partnership with Hakvoort Shipyards.

Last month we showed off our design for a 45 meter expedition yacht in Monaco (see earlier blog entry), which sparked a lot of interest, and requests to see a similar design in a 60 meter envelope. Here she is.  Full specifications and brochure available here.

We'll also be showcasing our new 44 meter Performance Schooner, developed in partnership with Derecktor Shipyards. The Performance Schooner is the very definition of performance without compromise.

The schooner rig allows for a flexible sail plan that can be optimized to a wide range of wind speeds while reducing both sheet loads and rig height. The appendages are modern yet easy to drive.  The result is a vessel supremely comfortable on a cruise, yet quick and aggressive on the race course.

See more on this exciting new design here.

Hope to see you at the show!

Brooklyn Boatworks Optimist Launch

Brooklyn Boatworks proudly launched and sailed their hand built Optimist Pram sailboats into the Hudson River today.  24 students from two Brooklyn, NY public schools worked on their boats all year, using hand tools and their own determination.

The launch was a tremendous success, with all students getting a chance to sail their new boats, as well as getting a hour long sailing lesson on Brooklyn Boatworks’ parter organization Hudson River Community Sailing’s J24 fleet.

Persak & Wurmfeld founded Brooklyn Boatworks in 2005 to give back to their local community.

Cakewalk’s First Dry Docking: “She Looks Like New”

We had the chance last week to sit with Captain Bill Zinser and Project Manager James Brewer of Derecktor Shipyards aboard Cakewalk V to discuss the vessel’s first dry docking as she prepared for her third transatlantic crossing.

The scheduling of this first dry docking emphasizes how busy Cakewalk has been in the first 18 months of service since her delivery in October 2010.  We see her pristine condition as a testament to a sound finishing program, good post-launch testing and a seamless handoff between shipyard and crew.

Captain Bill Zinser is thrilled that the vessel has not suffered one day of unscheduled downtime since her launch.   She has been incredibly reliable, and still looks like new.  He wants everyone to come and see how she has stood the test of time.

James Brewer noted that Cakewalk remains a testament to the quality and potential of the American Superyacht Industry.   “She is proof that northern European standards can be achieved in the United States, and no American client should be afraid to consider American builders when planning the construction of a world class custom yacht” he said.

Cakewalk, at 281 feet length overall and weighing 2,998 gross tons, remains the largest private yacht by volume ever built in the United States. P&W served as project engineer for Cakewalk during the final 18 months of her build at Derecktor Shipyards in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Introducing the Motive 25R

For Immediate Release

Motive Trimarans Introduces the Motive 25R, the Next Generation of Trimarans

New York, NY – April 26, 2012 – Motive Trimarans is excited to introduce the first carbon fiber, production trimaran in its class.  Available late summer 2012, the Motive 25R will make its US debut at the Newport International Boat show in September 2012 and debut in Europe at the Salon Nautique de Paris in December 2012.

Sleek, modern and performance oriented, the Motive 25R is designed for spirited day sailing and in-shore racing. The Motive 25R offers race performance in a stable, easy to sail package.  Innovative features include a fully battened, boomless square top mainsail; the Motive QuickstowTM system that allows the mainsail to be quickly raised, lowered and stored in the center hull cockpit; a unique and simple folding system for trailering; and the ability to be motored in compact mode.

“I was looking for a midsized trimaran that I could get my family out on for some adventure sailing, and I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted on the market,” said Motive Trimarans CEO and Design Director, Pete Ansel.  “The initial response to the Motive 25R design and concept has been tremendous here in the US and in Europe, where the boat is already being called the ‘mini-MOD 70’.”

Naval Architect Jeremy Wurmfeld of Persak & Wurmfeld added, “We teamed up with Motive Trimarans to design a stable, fast, fun, family friendly, but also race oriented boat. Our goals were to deliver performance and maximize time on the water by making both the sail handling and trailering as simple as possible.”

Tooling is complete and the first four boats are under construction in Salem, Massachusetts.

Motive Trimarans is establishing a global dealer network. Pricing for the Motive 25R will be approximately $85,000/€85,000 inclusive of VAT.  More information and specifications available at www.motivetrimarans.com.

Naval Architecture Students Visit P&W

Yesterday, four students from the Webb Institute for Naval Architecture in Glen Cove, NY traveled to P&W's offices for a sailing yacht design lecture and discussion with Carl Persak.

A graduate of Webb's undergraduate and graduate programs, Persak has assisted with their design courses for the last several years.

"This was a BIG help!" said Roxanne Schnact.  The students left P&W with new insights and tools to help them move their design projects forward.
